Cultural Awareness Month at Fusion in Park Wood - August 2012Home Nation Traditional Dress

Week 2 of the Cultural Awareness month was all about the Home Nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales). There was plenty of food for people to taste including Irish Soda Bread, Haggis, Iron Bru and Fish & Chips. The Haggis went down surprisingly well. There was also some interesting facts. For example did you know.....

  • In 1905, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (Welsh National Anthem) became the first national anthem to be sung at the start of a sporting event

  • The world's first public zoo first opened in 1829 in London
  • Edinburgh was the first city in the world with its own fire brigade in 1824

  • The Titanic' was built and launched from Belfast Harbour in Northern Ireland Home Nation - Crafts

Children were able to take part in some arts and crafts activities all based on the Home Nations – these included making Loch Nessies, love spoons and felt flags. A miniature Wellie Wanging competition was held where children competed for a lollipop prize. We also had KCC Libraries on hand who told traditional English stories.

These events are creating a real sense of community between local business owners and residents. Special thanks should go to the owner of Charlies Chips for donating the Fish and Chips Tasters!

Bhangra Dance WorkshopThe theme for this week was Bollywood and Bangra. Members of the local community embraced and celebrated the Indian culture with us.

There was a range of Indian food for people to sample, including samosa’s, onion Bhajis, mango chutney and Bombay mix. The children and parents were treated to henna tattoos

and a Bangra drummer and dancer were on hand to show everyone a few steps.Members of the Community Join in

The purpose of the events was to raise awareness of the different cultures living and working in Maidstone.

New Line Learning DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Project

New Line Learning Pupils reading books

The school applied for a Community Chest Fund for help towards buying books in order to encourage their students to read. Many schools now do not have their own libraries.  Each day at 9.45am, a bell sounds and the pupils drop whatever they are doing to read a book for 15 minutes.
