Spring clean your finances this new year

Spring clean your finances

Now the New Year is upon us, it's the perfect time to spring clean your finances.

Christmas can be an expensive time of year and you might now be feeling the pinch, but please do not fall behind with your rent.  Ensuring your rent is paid is extremely important as you could put your home at risk if you don't make your rent payment.

There are many ways you can make a payment, the simplest is via Direct Debit and text payments. For more information visit our pay-your-rent page.

If you are having trouble paying your rent, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can help you find a solution. You don’t have to deal with the situation on your own. Visit our rent page for more advice on how we can help you.

Here are some handy tips to help you save money in 2020:

  • Find out what you're entitled to
Do you know if you are receiving the right amount of benefits? There are many organisations that can help, with some offering online benefit calculator tools. Visit the gov.uk website for information on benefits and other organisations that can help.  If you need any further advice our Tenancy Support Advisors can help. Contact us for more information.

  • Clear out clutter and sell it online
Sell your unwanted items online on sites such as eBay or Facebook. If you sell on eBay remember you may sometimes be charged a listing fee and will be charged a final selling fee. Using the selling groups on Facebook is free.
To make your advert stand out include as much detail about the items as possible, such as size, condition, if you will deliver, and whether you will negotiate on price. Also, include where you are based, but be sure not to post exact addresses, for security reasons. Each selling group is likely to have its own rules - make sure you read them before posting to avoid being kicked out.

  • Use your smart device to save
Savings apps on your smartphone or tablet are designed to help you save money by linking to your current account and getting an overview of how and when you spend your income. They then calculate how much you can afford to save each month, and automatically move the money into a savings account. If you don't like using apps why not set up a standing order to regularly transfer an affordable amount to a savings account.
  • Compare supermarket prices
Visit Mysupermarket.co.uk to compare prices of individual items leading supermarkets.
