Regenerating Shepway

At Golding we are committed to providing quality housing for our customers and investing in local communities which they can be proud to call home.

We invest in our individual homes all the time and realise sometimes a large investment is needed to bring improvements to a whole area.

We have identified the Cambridge Crescent area in Maidstone as an area that could benefit from significant investment to create a new vision for the heart of Shepway.

CGI of proposed design

In May we consulted with customers, local businesses and the wider Shepway community about our plans to regenerate the area. We distributed regeneration packs giving information about our plans, including proposed time frames, our vision for the area and a consultation survey to capture thoughts and feedback. To view the information in the regeneration pack please click the link at the bottom of this page.

We would like to thank everyone that took part in our survey, giving us your thoughts and views on our initial proposals for the area. This feedback has been invaluable and has fed into further designs for the development. Some keys results include:

  • Of the households that responded 33% felt the quality of the current homes was poor to very poor, with a further 34% feeling the quality was average.
  • We asked, “What do you like about the area?”. Some of the popular answers included the variety of shops, the location and the green areas.
  • We also asked, “What do you least like about the area?”. The top responses included anti-social behaviour (ASB), lack of parking and not feeling safe
  • Just over 86% of those who responded agreed there is a need to invest in the Cambridge Crescent area of Shepway.

From the feedback received we have created a set of commitments for this project. We will commit to:

  • provide safe and secure, warm, and comfortable, energy efficient homes
  • deliver a thriving modern shopping area for local people
  • provide CCTV, improved lighting, and natural surveillance as part of the new homes and commercial shops design
  • provide quality improved landscaping areas including more trees and informal play areas
  • respect the history of Shepway, enhance those positive features and celebrate the past in a new vision.

We are hoping to submit our plans to Maidstone Borough Council for planning permission by the end of the year.

Should we be granted planning permission, we will carry out the project over 3 phases, starting from Spring 2022 and completing in 2028, estimating two years to complete each phase. The next steps for the project are:

  • Early 2022 - Planning application submitted.
  • Spring 2022 - Approval or decline of planning permission.
  • Spring – Autumn 2022 - If planning permission is approved we will start consulting with and moving customers in Phase 1, working with local partners.
  • Late 2022 – Start on site (phase 1)
