Connecting to broadband and digital services

Connecting to broadband and digital services

While broadband isn't a traditional utility like water or gas, a reliable internet connection is considered by many to be essential for managing your home. Many energy suppliers offer their cheapest tariffs and account management tools exclusively online or through smart apps.

Getting Connected Early

  • Avoid the 3-week delay: Setting up a new broadband line or transferring your existing service can take anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks to activate. Contact your internet service provider (ISP) as soon as you have your moving date to minimize downtime.
  • New-build properties: If you're moving into a newly built home, check with us or the provider to ensure the fiber infrastructure is fully active before you book an installation.

Social Tariffs (Cheaper Broadband)

If you're on a low income or receive benefits (such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Jobseeker's Allowance), you're likely eligible for a Broadband Social Tariff.

  • These are specialised, high-speed packages that function exactly like normal broadband but are capped at a significantly lower price (often between £12 and £20 a month).
  • They don't have mid-contract price hikes and usually carry no exit fees. Speak directly to major providers (like BT, Sky, Virgin Media, or Vodafone) and ask to be placed on their social tariff.

TV Licence

When you move home, your TV Licence does not automatically move with you. To keep your coverage uninterrupted and avoid a potential fine, you must update your address.

  • Update your current TV Licence for free. You can change your address up to three months in advance on the official website (www.tvlicensing.co.uk ). It only takes a couple of minutes and is completely free — be careful to avoid unofficial third-party websites that try to charge you a fee to change your details.
  • Free Licences. If you or anyone living with you is aged 75 or over and receives Pension Credit, you are entitled to a free TV Licence. Be sure to apply for this discount online or by calling 0300 790 6112.
